Get to know the tsunami with GPS technology

So far, people have been relying on classic seismic devices to identify the tsunami. At a conference in San Francisco, scientist Jeff Freymueller of the University of Alaska presented a faster and more accurate way to identify tsunamis using the Global Positioning System (GPS).

Historically, there has been a disadvantage that seismographs can only draw concussions on the ground. In order to know the intensity of these tremors, it usually takes a relatively long time. Whereas from Freymueller's point of view, with GPS systems, it is possible to identify very fast and fairly accurately the distance between moving layers.

The tsunami-sensitive element is faster and more accurate thanks to the Global Positioning System (GPS).

If you set up multiple GPS systems in an area at risk of earthquakes, you may be aware of it within a few minutes at the warning center, if there are seismic events on the high seas.

Freymueller said it has invented a machine capable of coordinating the function of the GPS system with the classic seismic recorders. It is possible to set up these machines, several hundred miles apart, off the high seas, and each machine costs less than $ 10,000.

According to Freymueller, the victims of the 2004 tsunami would not have been that much if they had had two hours to evacuate.
